Cloud Camp at The Broadmoor Officially Opened

By M+E Staff

The Broadmoor, the Five-Star, Five-Diamond resort in Colorado Springs, has officially begun welcoming guests at its new wilderness retreat on Colorado’s Cheyenne Mountain, Cloud Camp.

At an elevation of 9,200 feet, 3,000 feet above The Broadmoor, Cloud Camp is set on the historic 1924 site of Broadmoor founder Spencer Penrose’s original Cheyenne Lodge, overlooking Pikes Peak to the north and the Colorado Rockies to the west.

The 8,000-square-foot main lodge accentuates the feel of the historic timber and stone lodges found in the great national parks of the U.S. with hand-hewn beams, two stone fireplaces and art depicting the great American West. The great room serves as a space for relaxed gatherings with Adirondack chair rockers and a dining table for 28. The library is full of books and board games, while an expansive wrap around deck that offers unique views.

Cloud Camp can sleep 56 guests in total. Guestrooms feature hickory wood flooring and hickory paneled wood walls, custom designed beds outfitted with feather beds and throws, leather chairs and custom area rugs to round out a western feel. The main lodge houses seven guest rooms and 11 one and two bedroom cabins are a short walk from the main lodge, each with private porches and views of Pike National Forest and Colorado’s Front Range. For an inimitable experience, unique to Cloud Camp is the Fire Tower Suite, a suite accessed by way of 145 steps, perched atop a historic Colorado fire tower with a 360 degree view.

The culinary program at Cloud Camp is modeled after The Rabbit Club, an eating and drinking club for Philadelphia bluebloods that Spencer Penrose brought to Colorado Springs in 1914. The cuisine at Cloud Camp is inspired by the life and times of Penrose during the Golden Age of the 1920s, with reimagined interpretations of the classics of the time, such as Beef Wellington, Duck a l’Orange, Filets de Sole Newburg and Apple Tart Tatin. The beverage program continues the air of the Golden Age with Cloud Camp’s signature drink, the Spiced Rum Punch, a cocktail hour where Caviar and Blinis are served and Hot Toddies around the fireplace after dinner to fulfill Penrose’s vision that gourmet meals should be shared.

“From its spectacular locale atop Cheyenne Mountain, to its inspiring culinary program, Cloud Camp is a truly unique experience for our guests,” said Tina Harlow, general manager of Cloud Camp. “Introducing the property to our growing Wilderness Experience portfolio, which also includes The Ranch at Emerald Valley, The Broadmoor’s Fishing School, and The Broadmoor’s Fishing Camp, continues to define our commitment to offering exceptional, and varied, guest experiences.”

While enjoying Cloud Camp, guests can hike in the Pike National Forest, birding, photo safaris and rock art, as well as assist Chef each evening with the presentation of the Social Hour hors d’oeuvres.

Guests check in at The Broadmoor, leave their luggage behind to travel separately, and have the option of being transported to Cloud Camp in a four-wheel vehicle, on the back of a mule or by way of a guided three-hour hiking tour. Rates begin at $600 per night, based on double occupancy, and are all-inclusive.
