Karen McGuigan is the General Manager at the Hyatt Centric The Loop Chicago in Chicago, IL.
1. What do you like most about working at the Hyatt Centric the Loop Chicago?
Opening the first Lifestyle Brand for Hyatt Hotels in my home town. To help create this platform for Hyatt is very special. Empowering all our team members to make a difference personally in the guest experience.
2. How did you get into the industry?
I needed to work nights and weekends when my family was home to watch my son, therefore the hotel industry was the obvious choice. I walked in the Hyatt Regency O’Hare with no experience at 24 years-old and they gave me a chance. As a Desk Clerk, I knew I wanted to be a General Manager from the first day.
3. What are goals do you have in mind for the property for this year and further down the line?
I would like us to have the reputation to be a mentoring hub for young people looking to find a great career. Also, really be the destination choice for a guest experiencing our great city of Chicago.
4. What advice do you have for people looking to get into the industry?
Be genuine, not perfect. People know when you’re faking it. Be yourself. Young people have so much to offer in our industry! Being sincere and present is the key to success.
5. How do you think your past industry experience has prepared you for this role?
I am fortunate to work for a great companies/people (majority with Hyatt). The best experience for me was working in every department starting as a Desk Clerk, Housekeeping Manager, Director of Security, Operations Manager and many more. I was able to understand the daily operations of each part of the hotel and make a better leader.
