Punctuated by sandy bluffs, rocky cliffs, and miles of shoreline, the Oregon Coast is one of the state’s most revered destinations. Spanning 363 miles along the Pacific Ocean, the coastline is home to several scenic cities and towns, many of which accommodate meetings and events and offer abundant, unforgettable group activities. Northwest Meetings + Events highlights six standout cities that immerse attendees in coastal experiences that are supported by flexible venues, boutique lodging, and regionally sourced cuisine.
At the northern end of the Oregon Coast, Astoria, Seaside, and Cannon Beach are closest to Portland. Portland International Airport is served by major airlines, including Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, American Airlines, and others. From there, each of the three coastal cities are just under a two-hour drive, and there also are various public-transit options to get from Portland to the coast. The Point Intercity Bus Service is managed by the Oregon Department of Transportation and provides daily service between Portland Union Station and the Astoria Transit Center, and this route also makes stops in Seaside and Cannon Beach. While the Point Intercity Bus Service is managed by the state of Oregon, the program works with Amtrak, FlixBus, and Greyhound to sell tickets on their associated websites.

The NW Connector is a regional public transit program comprising several transit agencies that provides bus routes across northwestern Oregon. For groups looking to travel to Newport, the NW Connector’s Coast to Valley Express route offers direct service between Albany’s Amtrak Station and downtown Newport. When meeting in Lincoln City, Greyhound provides daily bus service from Salem’s Amtrak station to Chinook Winds Casino Resort, located north of the city’s downtown. Farther south in Florence, groups can access the seaside hub via the Link Lane bus route from Eugene’s Amtrak station, with round trips available three times per day. Link Lane is a public transit program operated by the Lane Council of Governments to connect communities within and beyond Lane County, which both Eugene and Florence are within.
As spring makes way for summer, the weather along the coast often fluctuates between rain and sunshine—sometimes flip-flopping within minutes—but the temperature often remains mild throughout the seasons. “The Oregon Coast is known for its temperate climate,” says Stephanie Hull, event and outreach coordinator at Explore Lincoln City, the city’s destination management organization. “While spring can bring a mix of rain and sun, the temperature stays in the 50s and 60s. During summer, you will find more sunshine and warmer weather kicking up to the 70s and sometimes 80s.”
As Oregon’s oldest city (founded in 1811), Astoria presents a wealth of heritage intertwined with its maritime culture. The city sits at the mouth of the Columbia River where it meets the Pacific Ocean, and planners will find plenty of small-town charm to elevate meetings. Astoria’s Cannery Pier Hotel & Spa is a distinctive lodging property that sits right on a dock extending some 600 feet into the Columbia River, framed by the Astoria-Megler Bridge that spans the river. “The hotel is ideal for corporate retreats, sales meetings, and seminars,” says Linh DePledge, vice president of brand and communications at Vesta Hospitality
in Vancouver, Washington. The company manages the Cannery and other properties along the coast. “The picturesque river views enhance any event,” she notes. There are two designated meeting spaces available: the Union Fish Meeting Room, which accommodates 56 attendees, and the Chinook Boardroom for up to 16.

Some 16 miles south in Seaside, planners will find a place that prides itself on providing an environment where groups can both accomplish meeting tasks and incorporate fun activities into agendas, according to Brian J. Owen, general manager at the Seaside Civic & Convention Center. “Attendees can go from meetings to ocean views in minutes,” he says. “The town blends classic coastal charm with modern amenities. Popular activities are beach walks, visits to nearby coastal trails, area breweries and restaurants, and casual social time along the waterfront. These experiences are easy to integrate and help strengthen attendee engagement.”
The Seaside Civic & Convention Center accommodates groups from 20 to 1,200 attendees across its 35,000 square feet of event space. Specific rooms include exhibit halls, divisible meeting rooms, breakout areas, and prefunction lobbies. “We host a wide mix of corporate meetings, nonprofit conferences, association events, government trainings, festivals, trade shows, retreats, and community gatherings,” says Owen. “Industries range from public safety and health care to education, tourism faith-based organizations, and professional associations.” Additional amenities on-site include catering through Oregon Fine Foods and in-house audiovisual support, plus high-speed Wi-Fi connections and three load-in/load-out areas.
Just a short drive down U.S. Route 101 from Seaside will land you in Cannon Beach, one of the more well-known destinations along the Oregon Coast. The city is often recognized as home of Haystack Rock, a towering 235-foot monolithic rock formation situated on the sandy shoreline—and at low tide, you can walk to it and observe sea life in the surrounding tide pools. In town, North Hemlock Street bustles with boutique shops, charming restaurants, and attractions like the Oregon Gallery and Coaster Theatre Playhouse. Vesta Hospitality operates two properties in Cannon Beach for planners to note that cater to events: Surfsand Resort and Wayfarer Restaurant & Lounge.

“Surfsand Resort is an oceanfront hotel with views of Haystack Rock,” says DePledge. “The recently renovated resort combines attentive service and distinctive amenities. Tidepool Event Space is a stunning venue on-site surrounded by natural light, with a breathtaking backdrop of Haystack Rock and the Pacific Ocean.” The space accommodates up to 200 attendees. Adjacent to and operated in tandem with the resort is Wayfarer Restaurant &
Lounge, which serves fresh-from-scratch Northwest coastal fare. The restaurant hosts private events on-site and provides catering services, with notable menu items including roasted halibut, smoked-salmon Benedict, and steamed Manila clams.
Closer to the central region of the Oregon Coast is Lincoln City, located southwest of the state’s capital city of Salem and sitting at the mouth of the Yaquina River where it flows into the Pacific Ocean. “Lincoln City embodies the quirky, salty, unapologetic identity of the Oregon Coast,” describes Hull. “With over 7 miles of coastline, [Lincoln City provides] soft, sandy beaches, hidden gems, lush trails, and stunning landscapes to explore.” For groups, the largest gathering option is Chinook Winds Casino Resort, located north of downtown Lincoln City in the Roads End neighborhood. The property houses some 31,000 square feet of meeting space—including a 20,000-square-foot ballroom—and catering is available for groups of up to 2,000 attendees. Planners also will find an on-site 243-room hotel, 18-hole golf course, four restaurants, and a food court.
Other Lincoln City properties to consider are Surftides Hotel, which is just south of Chinook Winds Casino Resort and offers event space that accommodates up to 125 attendees, and Inn at Spanish Head Resort Hotel, which features 120 oceanfront guest rooms and suites, plus two designated meeting rooms. These include the El Toro Ballroom, which hosts up to 125 people and can be divided into three smaller rooms, and the Balboa Meeting Room, available for groups of up to 30 attendees. Both rooms provide ocean views. As for less traditional event venues in the city, Hull notes the Lincoln City Cultural Center and The Bijou Theatre—the former offers meeting and breakout rooms, while the latter accommodates full buyouts for private movie experiences.

When it comes to team building, groups can look to Explore Lincoln City for a swath of hands-on learning experiences it provides, led by resident experts and aptly named “Exploriences.” Hull says, “We encourage visitors to explore the many natural wonders Lincoln City has to offer—from [seeing the] tide pools to a guided walk through Cascade Head Biosphere Region, there are plenty of interesting ways [for attendees] to discover the natural beauty the central Oregon Coast has.”
Farther south is Newport, a charming coastal town dotted with dockside oyster shacks and numerous fishing boats in the Port of Newport Marina. The city has an extensive lineup of notable attractions for planners to tap into, including the Oregon Coast Aquarium, Newport Discovery Zoo, Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum, and Yaquina Bay State Park. One of several events-friendly hotels is the Best Western Plus Agate Beach, also managed by Vesta Hospitality. “Perched atop a secluded hill, Best Western Plus Agate Beach offers a breathtaking vantage over the Pacific Ocean and Yaquina Bay Lighthouse,” says DePledge.
“Just steps from sandy beaches and a stone’s throw from area attractions, this hotel is as an all-encompassing beach escape.” In addition to 148 guest rooms, the property has some 5,000 square feet of event space for up to 320 attendees, plus an indoor heated pool and Sea Glass Bistro for seasonal seafood.

And finally, at the southern end of the Siuslaw National Forest in the Eugene, Cascades & Coast region, Florence blends small-town charm with huge sand dunes—the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area stretches 40 miles from Florence to Coos Bay. It is the largest expanse of coastal sand dunes in North America. Anchoring the city’s events landscape is the 21,000-square-foot Florence Events Center, able to host diverse conventions, meetings, and trade shows. In recent months, it hosted the Florence-based West Lane Emergency Operations Group’s Beat the Wave Emergency Preparedness Expo, which focused on connecting residents with area emergency service personnel to learn about preparing for natural disasters. The Florence Events Center also accommodated the Florence Arts,
Culture & Entertainment Gallery Committee’s Everything Odd-umn Reception with Awards, which is the nonprofit’s annual fall art show. Group-friendly lodging options in Florence include Driftwood Shores Resort, with its ocean-view guest rooms and on-site event space for up to 100 people, and the River House Inn, A Baymont by Wyndham Hotel, which features a mix of charming guest rooms and a meeting room for up to 48 people.
Whichever destination you choose to convene in along the Oregon Coast, you are likely to find plenty of seaside fun, endearing coastal communities, and a wealth of distinctive venues to enrich your meetings and events.
