Earlier this summer, The Alexander in Indianapolis unveiled a multimillion-dollar renovation that transformed all 209 guestrooms and suites, overhauled meeting and event spaces, and expanded the hotel’s landmark art program. The downtown Indianapolis property also joins Marriott Bonvoy’s Autograph Collection, a portfolio of over 340 independent hotels recognized for offering a distinct perspective on design, craft, and hospitality.
The Alexander has been one of the region’s most art-forward hotels since it opened in 2013. Following an extensive renovation, the property introduces fully redesigned accommodations, a reimagined outdoor plaza programmed for public use, and an art collection curated in partnership with the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields.
“The Alexander has always been a place where art, culture, and hospitality intersect,” says Matthew Smith, general manager of The Alexander, in a prepared statement. “This transformation allows us to build on that legacy in exciting new ways. From the remarkable art collection to the thoughtfully renovated guest spaces to the curated culinary experience at Plat 99, every detail reflects a sense of discovery and connection that makes The Alexander exactly like nothing else.”
The Alexander Offers an Immersive Art Experience
Art is at the heart of The Alexander experience. Curated in partnership with the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields, the hotel features an extensive art program that transforms the property into a living gallery. Attendees encounter more than 60 works of art throughout public spaces and guestrooms, including 14 site-specific commissions by renowned regional, national, and international artists. Even the hotel’s guest parking lot becomes part of the collection, where striking graffiti murals by acclaimed British street artist Nick Walker animate the concrete walls.
Among the most notable installations are the 99 hand-molded acrylic lamps by acclaimed Cuban-born artist and MacArthur fellow Jorge Pardo, which illuminate Plat 99, the hotel’s vibrant second-floor lounge. The hotel is also home to Standing Wave, a luminous iridescent sculpture by Alyson Shotz, as well as a large-scale installation by Paul Villinski composed of vinyl records reshaped into a flock of birds. Another highlight is Sonya Clark’s monumental sculptural portrait of Indianapolis entrepreneur and activist Madam C.J. Walker, created from thousands of combs in tribute to her legacy.
Together, these works form a thoughtfully curated collection that invites attendees to explore, reflect, and engage with contemporary art throughout their stay.
Inspired Design & Guest Spaces
The hotel offers 209 guestrooms and suites, each thoughtfully redesigned with modern finishes, elevated furnishings, and updated amenities that balance comfort and style. Original works of art continue to play a central role in the attendee experience, extending the hotel’s celebrated collection into each room. Hotel room art features works by several artists, including three Indianapolis-based artists: Casey Roberts, Gretchen Scherer, and Ryan Schneider.
Accommodations range from spacious guest rooms with California king or two queen beds to expansive Junior Studio Suites and the Presidential Suite, while a dedicated suite wing offers studio and two-bedroom accommodations for attendees seeking additional space and flexibility.
Beyond the guestrooms, the hotel’s reimagined outdoor plaza features updated paving, new lighting infrastructure, and expanded greenery. The revitalized space offers a welcoming setting for gatherings and special events, seamlessly connecting the hotel’s artistic spirit with its surrounding neighborhood.
Creative Cuisine & Social Spaces
At the center of the hotel’s social experience is Plat 99–Cocktails + Coffee, a day-to-night social lounge where craft coffee, inventive bites, and bespoke cocktails come together in a spirited atmosphere. The refreshed menu blends global flavors with local Indiana influence, reworking familiar favorites with unexpected pairings that give classic dishes new life.
New furniture and thoughtfully arranged seating create inviting spaces designed to encourage connection and gathering, whether attendees are meeting for morning coffee, sharing small plates with friends, or settling in for evening cocktails. Attendees can gather indoors or enjoy views of downtown Indianapolis from the terrace while mixologists craft artisanal beverages using fresh, regional ingredients.
Inspiring Gatherings in the Heart of Indianapolis
Designed to host meaningful gatherings, The Alexander offers 16,500 square feet of flexible indoor meeting and event space across 17 venues, complemented by a vibrant outdoor plaza. Event spaces feature abundant natural light, ergonomic furnishings, and state-of-the-art audiovisual technology, along with signature Nourishment Hubs designed to inspire creativity, collaboration, and connection.
